How to Fix RV Toilet Leaking on Floor

Owning an RV is good if you are someone who likes to take his family or friends for trips. However, you must be prepared to deal with the maintenance part of ownership. One of the problems you may have to solve is a leaking RV toilet. Knowing how to fix RV toilet leaking on floor is very important.

RV repair services can get expensive when you hire someone to do it for you. Repair rates usually range between $75 to $130 per hour. Well, there are some RV repairs that you can do on your own. An example of such repair is a leaking RV toilet.

How to Go About It

1. Determine the cause of the leakage

Before you repair your leaking toilet, you need to first determine the cause of the leak. Is your toilet leaking all the time or does it leak whenever you flush it? If the leaking is happening only when you flush your toilet, then there are two causes. One of the cause could be a damaged water module assembly. The fresh water connection of the toilet could also be loose.

You should ensure that you tighten your water connection. As the RV moves, the vibrations and variations in temperatures can loosen the connections. If the toilet still leaks yet the connections are tight, then the cause of the leak is a bad water module.

For most RVs, the water module is usually made of plastic. The plastic can become brittle as a result of age and heat. To repair it, you can purchase a repair kit that comes with a new toilet seal and water module. You can get these parts from any RV parts store.

2. Acquire the right tools.

To perfectly do the job, you need the right tools. The most important tool you will need is a basin wrench. You should shut the water and allow the toilet to drain. You should then remove the nuts connecting the toilet to the floor.

After you have detached the toilet from the floor, disconnect the fresh water line using the basin wrench. Now it’s time to replace the old water module with a new one. First, turn the toilet upside down. You can use a screw driver to remove any screws so that you can twist and pull the flush tube off the water module.

3. Disconnect the wirelink.

You should then twist the water module so that you can disconnect its wirelink. Once you have taken the wire link off the lever arm hole, you can then proceed to install a new water module by reversing the steps.

Since the water module comes with a new toilet seal, you should also replace the old one, even if it is still in a good condition. Replacing the seal will save you from another potential leak in the future. Installing a new one only takes a few seconds.

4. Remove the tag preventing odor.

Once you have replaced your seal, you should remove the rag that prevents tank odor from getting inside your RV. You can then put the toilet back in place and tighten the nuts. You should then reconnect your toilet’s fresh water line. To check for any leaks, flush test the toilet.

If your toilet is still leaking, then it could be as a result of a hidden problem that you cannot repair on your own. In that case, you will have to take your RV to be repaired by someone who is specialized. If there are no leaks, you are done with the job.
